A sustainability strategy sets the framework for sustainability work and includes focus areas, objectives and measures that ensure that the company acts responsibly in relation to its environment. Through a well-defined strategy, confidence in the listed company can be strengthened while minimizing the risks of negative reactions from society.

Any strategy, regardless of its type, should answer what results are desired to be achieved, how it will be implemented and what resources can be deployed to get there. To begin with, a materiality analysis should provide a picture of the areas deemed relevant. These areas should then be linked to specific objectives and activities deemed necessary to meet the objectives. For the strategy to be credible, it is also important to explain what resources the company has that will enable it to deliver its vision, which may include investments in innovation and development, as well as training or membership of networks such as SBTi.

The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) is an EU regulation aimed at institutional investors, financial advisors and other actors in the financial services sector and addresses their sustainability reporting. The regulation is part of the EU's Green Deal, with the overall objective of creating a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. The aim of SFDR is to counteract greenwashing of financial products, increase transparency and harmonise sustainability reporting for the financial sector, and facilitate investment decisions for investors.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a framework and collaboration between the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, WWF and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) to set science-based emission reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement. Companies can join SBTi and have their targets validated, which means that SBTi confirms that the targets are science-based based on specific criteria. In this way, a company can increase the credibility of its sustainability strategy and governance.

The Task Force for Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) is a framework developed to clarify the risks and opportunities presented by climate change. TCFD reporting aims to provide information on both the company's impact on the environment and the impact of climate change on the company's financial position. The EU Taxonomy is a classification system and framework to help the capital market both provide and get a fair picture of how sustainable a business is. The SFDR and the CSRD, in turn, are regulatory frameworks that financial market participants (SFDR) and listed companies (CSRD) must comply with. Both directives are designed on the basis of the taxonomy and its overall objectives and purpose. The TCFD and GRI are additional frameworks that facilitate sustainability reporting and are widely used outside the EU.
